Collection contains a variety of items including a number of letters from prominent figures such as Abraham Baldwin, James Jackson, and Thomas Mann Randolph. Topics included the death of James Jones, Thomas Jefferson, constitutional amendments, the Federalists' attempt to arouse hostility against Spain, slave payments, La. politics, an Oregon boundary dispute, the Polk administration, yellow fever, James Monroe, Aaron Burr, Samuel Chase, and John Pickering. Some items are concerned with the boundaries between S.C. and Ga. and include correspondence with James Burchell Richardson, governor of S.C. There is a letter from Thomas Jefferson regarding benne seeds and his Barbary sheep. Other correspondents include Josiah Meigs, Henry Lee, Joseph Habersham, Augustin Smith Clayton, Robert Augustus Toombs, Goode Bryan, Henry Lewis Benning, and Alexander Hamilton Stephens. There are some papers executed by John Milledge during his term as governor.
